KaraokeCrowd is built on open-source software and public data. This page lists what we use, where it comes from, and under which license. When something here changes, we update this page and the date above.
The listings
The karaoke listings themselves are the community's work. The directory is not a purchased database: singers, hosts, and venues contribute shows, corrections, and confirmations, and every contribution goes through the same checks before it appears on a public page.
Boundaries and areas
The states, provinces, counties, metro areas, and municipalities you can browse come from official and open boundary data:
- United States: U.S. Census Bureau, TIGER/Line shapefiles (2024 vintage), public domain. States, counties, and metro-area polygons. Which counties belong to a metro area follows the official 2023 OMB delineation.
- Canada: Provinces from geoBoundaries. Municipalities and census divisions adapted from Statistics Canada, Census Subdivision Boundary File, 2025 (reference date January 1, 2025). Metro areas adapted from Statistics Canada, Census Metropolitan Area and Census Agglomeration Boundary File, 2021. Economic-region names adapted from Statistics Canada, Economic Region Boundary File, 2021; the boundary polygons for those regions come from geoBoundaries.
- Germany: Länder (states) and the boundaries of the government-district statistical regions from geoBoundaries. Districts (Kreise): © GeoBasis-DE / BKG 2026 (Datenlizenz Deutschland – Namensnennung 2.0), the official federal boundary product VG250.
geoBoundaries data is licensed under CC BY 4.0. Statistics Canada data is licensed under the Statistics Canada Open Licence. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product.
Population figures
To decide which Canadian communities get their own browsable page, we use population counts from Statistics Canada, 2021 Census (table 98-10-0002-01), under the same open license.
The map
Map tiles are © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). The map shows this credit in place.
Built on open source
KaraokeCrowd runs on open-source software, including OCaml and the Dream web framework, PostgreSQL, Tailwind CSS, esbuild, Leaflet, and Caddy.
KaraokeCrowd's own code is not open source today.
